CHICAGO– The Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS) is pleased to announce that 2012 SLAS Asia Conference Chair Mike Zhang, Becton Dickinson and Company, Shanghai, China was recently honored for his visionary contributions to the international laboratory science and technology community.

Zhang is the recipient of the Henry P. Becton Volunteer Impact Award for creating and nurturing scientific educational opportunities for China-based researchers, engineers and students involved in drug discovery and development.  This award is bestowed annually to deserving employees of Becton Dickinson and Company.

“We are extremely proud of Mike,” said SLAS President Dave Dorsett.  “Mike has been working tirelessly for the past three years to create educational opportunities for the scientific community in China.  We are also appreciative of Becton Dickinson and Company for recognizing Mike’s hard work and dedication.”

Zhang is currently the chair of the Scientific Program Committee for the 2012 SLAS Asia Conference and Exhibition, which will be presented June 19-21 at the Grand Hyatt Shanghai.  The Henry P. Becton Volunteer Impact Award carries with it a significant financial grant that will be used to underwrite scientific presentations at the upcoming SLAS Asia Conference and Exhibition.  Three hundred fifty participants and 50 multinational exhibitors are expected to attend this event.  Educational sessions will address topics related to drug discovery technologies, stem cells in drug discovery, and drug discovery from screening to therapy.

Zhang and his program committee recently added a full-day short course to the program.  “What Editors Want: An Author Guide to Publishing in Scientific Journals” will be presented by  Jianzhong Xi, Ph.D., of Peking University; JALA Editor-in-Chief Dean Ho, Ph.D., of Northwestern University; and SLAS Director of Publishing Nan Hallock. The short course will offer a comprehensive review of how to prepare and successfully publish original manuscripts in western scientific journals with emphasis on SLAS’s two official journals – the Journal of Biomolecular Screening and the Journal of Laboratory Automation.

Headlining the 黄金城游戏 as keynote speakers are Xiaodong Wang, Ph.D., Director, National Institute of Biological Science, Beijing; and Mahendra Rao, M.D., Ph.D., Director, NIH Center for Regenerative Medicine.
